South Africa embraces the G20 (and Trump)
The Med-Or notebook dedicated to South Africa, which is leading the G20 this year, is now online

On February 11, 2025, the Med-Or Italian Foundation organized a seminar entitled “Towards the G20 in South Africa – Africa’s Major Challenges in Energy, Climate Change, and Development Potential”, held by Dr. Jakkie Cilliers, Founder of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Africa and Head of the African Futures and Innovation (AFI) programme.
This analysis takes into account the seminar’s findings and further explores subsequent developments in the lead-up to the G20 Heads of State Summit scheduled for November 22–23, 2025, as well as the upcoming EU-AU summit.
This report outlines the reasons why 2025 marks a pivotal moment for Europe-South Africa relations. South Africa serves not only as a gateway to Africa, but also as a bridge to the Global South, offering valuable opportunities for future cooperation, including potential bilateral initiatives with Italy.
