Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh speaks at the Med-Or Foundation in Rome, on the sidelines of the Italy-Africa Conference

On Tuesday 30 January, Med-Or Foundation hosted at its headquarters in Rome the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This is the second visit of President Hassan Sheikh to the Med-Or foundation in one year, illustrating Med-Or excellent relations with Somalia.

The event, opened by Med-Or Chairman Marco Minniti, featured a one-to-one interview by the editor in chief La Repubblica, Maurizio Molinari. President Hassan Sheikh explained latest developments in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa in addition to key topics of the Italy-Africa summit.

Somalia represents a strategic pivot in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and is a key partner for Italy. Somalia is, however, grappling with several challenges that risk further heighten regional tensions, with implications for international stability. The initiative carried out by Med-Or is part of a broader commitment to strengthen relations with Africa, by consolidating stability, prosperity and cultural ties between Italy, Europe and the African continent.

Somalia has been a key recipient country of Med-Or support, including in scholarship for Somalis students currently undertaking university courses in Italy. In 2022, Med-Or Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Somalia in the fields of higher education, promotion of the Italian language, cultural and educational initiatives, health security, training in the justice sector, public administration and professional training.
